Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • Red velvet cake mix (for heart shapes)
  • Butter and flour for loaf pan

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. Prepare the red velvet cake batter according to package instructions. Bake as directed and let cool completely. Once cooled, use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out heart shapes.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, beat eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract until combined.
  5. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth.
  6. Slowly stir in the boiling water until the batter is well combined (it will be thin).
  7. Pour half of the chocolate batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  8. Arrange the red velvet heart shapes in a single layer down the center of the batter.
  9. Carefully pour the remaining chocolate batter over the hearts, covering them completely.
  10. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the chocolate batter (not in the heart) comes out clean.
  11. Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

For an extra touch, dust the top with powdered sugar or drizzle melted white chocolate for a decorative finish.
