  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough in half, wrap each in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out one portion of chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  8. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until the edges are set but cookies are still soft.
  10. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  11. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

For extra decoration, you can drizzle melted white chocolate over the cooled cookies or add sprinkles before baking for a festive touch.
