Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon chai spice blend (ground cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, black pepper)
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and half of the chai spice blend. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll the dough out into a 12×15 inch rectangle.
  5. Spread softened butter evenly over the dough. Mix brown sugar with the remaining chai spice blend and sprinkle evenly over the butter.
  6. Roll the dough tightly from the long edge, then cut into 12 equal rolls. Place rolls in a greased baking dish.
  7. Cover and let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes until puffy.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. While baking, prepare the frosting by beating cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth.
  10. Allow rolls to cool slightly before spreading frosting over the warm cinnamon rolls. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

For an extra chai punch, sprinkle some ground chai spices on top of the frosting just before serving.
