Sugar Cookies

Classic sugar cookies with a tender crumb and sweet, buttery flavor, perfect for any occasion or holiday celebration.

Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
  6. Add buttermilk 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough is soft but not sticky.
  7. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place on baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
  8. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your palm.
  9. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are just starting to brown.
  10. Allow cookies to cool for 2 minutes on baking sheet before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle cookies with colored sugar before baking or decorate with icing once cooled.
